Upcoming Changes to the Dutch Tax Portal and eHerkenning Services

Effective July 1, 2024, significant updates will impact businesses operating in the Netherlands regarding the Dutch Tax Portal and eHerkenning services.

New Taxpayer Portal

The old taxpayer portal will be permanently closed, requiring all users to transition to the new portal, "Mijn Belastingdienst Zakelijk." This new platform aims to simplify tax management for businesses by offering enhanced security, a user-friendly interface, and centralized management for all tax declarations, including VAT returns, corporate income tax, and OSS declarations.

Login Options

Users can access the new portal using one of three methods:

  • DigiD: Available exclusively to Dutch self-employed individuals or sole proprietors.

  • eHerkenning: Open to all users, requiring prior application. As of January 29, 2024, this option is particularly relevant for foreign companies without a Chamber of Commerce registration in the Netherlands.

  • European approved digital identity (eID): Supported for those with digital IDs from EU countries.

eHerkenning for Foreign Companies

A notable update is the availability of eHerkenning for foreign companies without Chamber of Commerce registration. This change allows various legal forms, including sole proprietorships and partnerships, to apply for eHerkenning, facilitating their access to the new portal. This is essential for foreign entrepreneurs needing to file VAT returns in the Netherlands.

Implications of the Transition

By July 1, 2024, all businesses, including foreign entities, must transition to the new portal for filing VAT returns and other tax declarations. The old portal will be discontinued, and previous login credentials will no longer be valid. The Dutch Tax Authorities emphasize that this change is designed to enhance security and user experience.

Preparing for the Changes

The shift to "Mijn Belastingdienst Zakelijk" and the implementation of eHerkenning mark a significant modernization of the Dutch tax filing system. Businesses are encouraged to prepare promptly to ensure compliance and maintain uninterrupted access to tax services.
